Et le mot est faible pour définir les notes Osborniennes tout droit descendues de la comète. Ce n’est sûrement pas par hasard s’il nomma son second label “TANSTFAAL PLANETS”.
De Londres à Berlin en passant par Paris, il fût un des fervent résident des soirées SUB:STANCE hébergées par le Panorama Bar et le Berghain à Berlin.
Aujourd’hui, le temps du Sub:stanciel est révolu et Osborn se concentre davantage sur son travail “in studio” et sur ses passages derrière les platines.
Anglais de souche, il est installé à Berlin depuis 15 ans, c’est de là qu’il répond à nos questions.
Merci pour le temps que tu nous accordes, on vient perturber ta soirée, qu’étais tu en train de faire à l’instant ?
J’étais en train de me plonger dans les méandres de la théorie musicale afin de pousser encore plus loin ma production et aussi pour enrichir mon propre plaisir à faire de la musique.
Studieux, comment est-ce que tu travailles ?
Seul ou accompagné ? Les deux. Quand je travaille avec quelqu’un, j’ai tendance à sortir de ma coquille et à devenir plus décisif et confiant par rapport aux choix qui se présentent. En parallèle, j’aime aussi faire mes expérimentations en solo.
Vinyl? CD? MP3? Je travaille avec des fichiers WAV 24 bits de vinyls que je traite sur ma station de numérisation haut de gamme. Ce procédé conserve le son unique des vinyls que j’aime. C’est d’une qualité largement supérieure à ce qu’offrent les platines que l’on peut trouver en boîte de nuit. J’ai ainsi fusionné un son vinyl parfait avec la technologie moderne des lecteurs CDJ Nexus. En résumé, je joue des vinyls via une carte SD.
Un EP sur TANSTAAFL records par an depuis 2011, TANSTFAAL PLANETS en mouvement, des dates à Paris, Berlin, New York, comment est ce que tu organises ton temps ?
J’ai appris à sauter sur chaque instant de temps libre que je peux trouver pour accomplir ce que j’ai à faire. Ça ne me fait plus peur : avant, j’angoissais beaucoup par rapport au fait de ne pas avoir de « vie de travail structurée ». Maintenant, je prends une approche beaucoup plus « spirituelle » et accepte les choses comme elles viennent, tout en essayant juste de me pousser à créer le plus possible et le plus souvent possible.
Quel avenir pour TANSTAAFL records ? Quels sont tes projets en cours ?
Il y a une collaboration à venir de moi-même et October. Sur le sous-label TANSTAAFL PLANETS, je viens de sortir un excellent 12″ de Bill Youngman, et celui de John Daly qui sortira en Avril est en train d’être pressé en ce moment-même. Cette année, nous avons beaucoup de grands artistes qui vont contribuer au label comme DJ Spider, Joey Anderson, Joel Alter, Kowton, et d’autres encore !
Quelles sont tes plus grandes sources d’influences ?
J’ai énormément d’influences! Jeff Mills au Lost à Londres au début des années 90 fut une révélation pour moi, et les Sabresonic au Happy Jax de Andrew Weatherall aussi dans la même époque. J’aime aussi tout ce qui est Dub Reggae, et j’aimerais ça pour toujours. Le Dub Reggae a été la source la plus constante de plaisir et d’inspiration dans ma vie. En fait, Dub Disco de Bunny Wailer fut mon premier vinyl, avant que je ne me mette aux cassettes.
Tu sors toujours en boîte ? Ton top 5 des « places te be »
Je sors en tant que « raver » peut-être une fois tous les 3 mois, même si je joue en boîte presque tous les weekends. Si je devais faire une liste, sans ordre de préférence elle serait la suivante :
1) Le Louvre à Tokyo
2) La Concrete à Paris
3) Le Berghain à Berlin
4) Les soirées Grounded Theory à Berlin
5) Le Dude Club à Milan.

Un peu tout ce qui a ce genre d’ambiance. J’aime partir sur de la Deep et remettre le public à zéro pour ensuite reconstruire sur cette base – pour cela, ce genre de son fonctionne bien tout en gardant un niveau d’intensité élevé afin que les gens ne commencent pas à partir du dancefloor – même si ça peut arriver avec ce genre de musique. (rires) Mais en fait c’est un peu le but, j’aime bien voir la piste vide parce que je peux ensuite m’éclater à recréer l’atmosphère dans mes conditions.

“Cosmic”
And it is nothing to say to define the subtle notes and sounds coming straightly from the comet.
You know now where TANSTFAAL PLANETS – the name of his second label – is coming from: the deep space!
He created TANSTAAFL Records with his two buddies DJ October and Eric Cloutier with whom they will sign interstellar sounds, deep as f***.
From London to Berlin through Paris, he was one of the major resident in the SUB:STANCE parties at Panorama Bar and Berghain. SUB:STANCE is now over and Osborn is all and deeply concentrated on his Studio task and his performances behind the decks.
He’s english and it’s from Berlin – where he lives now since 15 years – that he answered to our questions.

Diving deep into music theory in an attempt to be able to push my production abilities further and there increase my enjoyment
About your work ?
Do you work on your own, or do you collaborate with other people? Both, with collaborating I come out of my shell and become more decisive and confident with the choices but alone in enjoy experimenting
Vinyl? CD? MP3 ? 24bit wav recordings of my vinyl via my high end ripping station.I like the unique vinyl sound the recording process gives me – which a superior vinyl sound that the turntables in a club can never provide. So there fore I have fused a perfect vinyl sound with modern technology in the CDJnexues players. So simple answer is – I play vinyl via a SD card.
Working on 1 EP / year since 2011 on TANSTAAFL records, TANSTAAFL PLANETS in process, many dates in Paris, Berlin, New-York … Can you tell us a bit about your workflow?
I have learnt to literally steal time where I can to get the stuff done I need to do.
I am ok with this now, before I used to panic a lot about not having a ‘structured work life’ – Nowdays I take a far more ‘spiritual’ approach and accept how things are and just push myself to create as much as possible whenever possible.
What’s next for TANSTAAFL RECORDS? Upcoming projects to look forward to?
There is a collab. release to come from myself and October and then on the ‘sub’ label I have literally just put out a really great 12″ by Bill Youngman, then in April the next one is from John Daly that is just being cut now as I type this. Then for this year we have load of great artists contributing to the label like DJ Spider, Joey Anderson, Joel Alter, Kowton and more!
What is your biggest musical influence ?
There is a lot.
Jeff Mills at Lost in london during the early 90s. Sabresonic at Happy Jax hosted by Andrew Weatherall also in the 90’s and Dub reggae since the begging of time and for all of enternity! I’d probably say Dub Reggae has been the most consistent source of pleasure and inspiration in my life. In fact Dub Disco by Bunny Wailer was must first vinyl record I purchased, before I just had cassettes.
Do you go out clubbing a lot? Your top 5 of the places to party ?
I maybe go out just as a ‘raver’ maybe once every 3 months, although I am playing in clubs almost every weekend. Some clubs I really love to play at or dance in are:

I like to go deep and reset the crowd so I can then build up from there – these kind of tracks to that but keep the intensity levels up without going so deep that people leave the floor – although that will happen even with these tracks haha but thats the point, I am happy to see the floor empty because then I can really enjoy bringing the atmosphere back but under my terms.
