Voilà maintenant deux mois que Floating Points a mis « King Bromeliad » en full stream sur Soundcloud. Plus de 100 000 vues, perso ça ne m’étonne pas sachant que le Londonien est un gage de qualité à lui tout seul. Réputé pour l’excellence comme pour l’émotion qui se dégagent de ses productions, Floating Points s’est fait discret ces dernières années avec une seule sortie depuis 2011, à savoir son 12’ « Wires » qui relevait plus de l’ambient que du boogie.
Retour aux sources avec un maxi 2 titres taillé pour le dancefloor, Sam Shepherd signe ainsi le 37ème opus de son label Eglo Records, cofondé avec Alexander Nut. Rien d’inattendu ici, ça pulse, ça swingue, c’est jazzy à souhait.
L’EP débute avec « King Bromeliad », commérages de soirées laissant place à un shuffle au groove deepy smoothie relevé de nappes synthé résolument soulful. Un brin de candeur apporté par le vibraphone, des rythmiques chaudes et des percu’ qui appellent au dodelinage de tête, le neuroscientifique connait ses formules sur le bout des doigts !
Inspiré par la capitale française (à en croire le titre), l’anglais continue sur sa lancée avec « Montparnasse », petite perle minimaliste de 11 minutes aux basses profondes surplombées d’une voix nébuleuse flottant au-dessus des hi-hats qui viennent subtilement se joindre à la partie. Un break au synthé à la moitié du titre tient l’auditeur en haleine pendant une bonne minute trente avant de repartir dans une deep aux influences jazz fusion/broken beat.
Reste plus qu’à espérer pour qu’un LP ne se fasse pas prier.

Floating Points’ new EP released on Eglo records : «King Bromeliad»
It’s been two months since Floating Points has put a full stream of « King Bromeliad» on Soundcloud. More than 100 000 views, as far as I’m concerned, no surprise knowing that the Londoner is a pledge of quality on his own. Renowned for the excellence and the emotion that emerges from his productions, Floating Points has been relatively discreet these past few years with only one release since 2011, namely the 12’ “Wires” which came under ambient more than boogie.
Back to basics with a 2-track maxi carved for the dance floor, Sam Shepherd signs the 37th opus of his label Eglo Records, co-founded with Alexander Nut. Nothing unexpected here, it’s catchy, bouncy, and incredibly jazzy.
The EP begins with “King Bromeliad”, party chatters leaving room for a groovy and deepy shuffle spiced with some soulful layers of synths. A grain of innocence brought by the vibraphone, warm rhythmics and drums that incites you to tap your head to the beat, the neuroscientist knows his formulas on his fingertips!
Inspired by the French capital (according to the title), Floating Points pursue his path with “Montparnasse”, an 11-minute little gem, minimalist with deep bass overlooked by a cloudy voice floating above the hi-hats that subtly comes to join the party. A synth break half way keeps the listener on tenterhooks for a whole minute and a half before coming back to a deep house with jazz fusion/broken beats influences.
All that remains is hoping for a LP not to be overdue.
